Local Destination: Red Bank Battlefield Park

Red Bank Battlefield Park is nestled in a beautiful spot right along the New Jersey side of the Delaware River.  Originally the Whitall family's Red Bank Plantation, it is best known as the location of a decisive American victory during the Revolutionary War.  Park goers can not only visit the FREE  Whitall House (still standing since 1748) but can also view the remains of Fort Mercer and learn about the battle from the monuments scattered throughout the upper sections of the grounds.  Check out their interactive website for a fascinating look at the park's history!
Almost the entire park is shaded and the added breeze coming off the river make it a fantastic place to be during the hot days of summer.  Scattered throughout the grounds are benches (donated by local families), picnic tables, and pavilions.  For the preschool and toddler set, there is one of the cutest and most imaginative little tot lots we've seen in the area.  For 5 and over, the park is the location of a giant playground shaped like an old-fashioned boat so cool that even older kids are going to want to explore it.
The park by itself is absolutely beautiful and already would have been one of our top rated parks in the area, but the real icing on the cake that bumps it up to the number one spot so far in my book is the walking trail right along the Delaware.  The paved trail runs the length of the entire park and is flanked by a stone beach on one side and benches and shaded seating areas on the other.  The stone beach is accessible at various points along the park..  Visitors can also enjoy the view from a short pier coming out over the river.
The Red Bank Battlefield Park manages to capture that calming seaside feeling and is perfect for both relaxation and fun - not to mention the history lesson to boot.  Bring a book, bring a lunch, bring the family - this is definitely one of the places in the area that deserves a visit from everyone.  Open daily from sunrise to sunset with FREE admission and FREE parking.
