“I see it! I see it!” was the cry we heard from the children in our van as we approached Dutch Wonderland, the family amusement park nestled in the heart of Lancaster County. This special “kingdom for kids” comes complete with an eye-catching castle entrance, and features rides and entertainment that will especially appeal to children in preschool and elementary school. We couldn’t wait to start our day!
While the older children rode the Kingdom Coaster over and over again, the younger members of our group were delighted by the Joust Family Coaster (and everyone is looking forward to the opening of Dutch Wonderland’s newest coaster, Merlin’s Mayhem, scheduled to begin thrilling riders later this summer!) Our group was also delighted by the Flying Trapeez, the Bumper Cars, and the enormous Fun Slide. Despite it being the summer season, we found short wait times at all our favorite rides, and plenty of mature trees to offer shade from the sun. The ride operators were helpful and well-informed. They definitely helped us have a Dutch-wonderful day!
Out on Exploration Island we spotted some dinosaurs roaming in the woods, and it was fun to see if we could catch a glimpse of them while exploring the island on the Sunoco Turnpike and the Gondola Cruise. The dino excavation area is a low-key spot for young paleontologists to enjoy the sand and sun, while older visitors will enjoy reading about the various dinosaurs along the wooded path.
Duke’s Lagoon was a huge hit with our group! The splash pad has three different sections, and children will be delighted by the tipping buckets, sprinklers, squirt guns, slides, and even a water cannon. Adults will enjoy the abundance of chairs, upbeat music, and conveniently located concessions. Everyone in our party enjoyed the thrilling Pipeline Plunge water slide. Just make sure you wear your shoes as you make your way to the top of the tower, and plan to have a minimum weight of 90 lbs in each inflatable.
You certainly aren’t left wanting for entertainment when you visit Dutch Wonderland. The Frog Prince Dive Show was definitely a highlight. The entertaining storyline appealed to all age groups, and the actors and divers went out of their way to make sure everyone had a great time. Be warned – if you sit in the splash zone you really will get wet. Very very wet! We also loved the travelling band The Wonderers, whose playing and dancing had us clapping along. And don’t forget to catch a show at Celebration Theater, or relax and listen to a story at Storytime Corner. Dutch Wonderland is indeed a "wonder-full" place for a family adventure!
